About Me and Reiki Turtle
My name is Mirjana; I came to London in 1991, leaving my home country, Croatia, aged 19. Since I was a little girl, I felt a calling for service to others; I didn’t want anyone to suffer and feel alone. I felt the interconnectedness with everything around me, and when I felt sad and alone, there was this invisible presence helping me overcome it. I was fortunate enough to have spent most of my preschool years with my grandparents in a little village outside Zagreb, and this place has been my healer, teacher, and inner core.
Life has been full of curves and bumps while growing up in Croatia and finding my feet in the UK. When I was 28 I developed a Lichen Planus, an incurable skin condition that offers discomfort 24h a day. It took over my life, and they told me there was nothing they could offer me but steroid cream. This was the first time I found comfort in pain as continuous itching and not being able to scratch was extremely tiring, and sometimes, to have a short break, I would scratch until it hurt. This disease took everything from me, I felt dirty, didn’t want to undress in front of my husband, my self-esteem and my confidence dived to the ground.
With the help and support of my husband, I resigned from my job and tended to my health. Within six months, I was cured by traditional Chinese Medicine with Dr Mazin Al-Khafaji. I owe this Dr so much as he not just cured me but inspired and reminded me of the path I wish to follow. As there were no Traditional Chinese Medicine courses in the UK then, I enrolled on a pioneering Ayurvedic Studies course at Ealing University. Ayurveda is a traditional Indian herbal medicine system that is 5000 years old and still remains a way of life in India. Following three years of university studies and spending three months at SDM College of
Ayurveda & Hospital in Hassan made me see what herbal medicine could do to our well-being, and I was very fortunate to have guidance and support from the outstanding Ayurvedic doctors and teachers and an opportunity to visit Shri Kshetra Dharmastala and have a meal with Shri Dr D. Veerandra Heggade. My time in India was a profound and spiritual experience I will never forget. It felt like home.
Practising Ayurveda in the UK was and is challenging as most purification treatments are not allowed, and I felt politics and bad practices were very much in charge of its faith. After a few years of doing palliative care, I’ve placed my Ayurvedic dream on hold, as I could not give my 100% to someone in need. It turned into a hobby for friends, family, and acquaintances.
Three years ago, entering into my menopausal period and then the COVID outbreak, I found myself withdrawing from here and now and dwelling over my past. Some people call this going through the ‘night of the soul’, and I realised that I had pushed aside many things that were now coming to the surface. My meditations got longer and profound, answers begun to flow through my dreams or randomly through the night I would be wide-awake releasing and understanding my emotional pains. It made me see the walls I’ve built around myself and created obstacles that were not there. This is how I found Reiki.
I see now that Reiki energy has always been by my side and was always connected; I just forgot how to tap into and understand my (our) connection with the Universe.
Reiki removed the walls, slowed me down, opened my heart, and returned me to my centre.
I would love to be part of your Reiki journey; it would be a privilege.
